Cone is frozen out of his start

March 11, 1998|By NEWSDAY

TAMPA, Fla. -- David Cone was no match for El Nino last night as a freakish cold spell forced him to miss a spring-training start. With fans at Legends Field wrapped in blankets, the New York Yankees thought it best to keep Cone insulated from a stiff wind and temperatures in the mid-40s.

"I don't know that taking a chance right now does us any good," Cone said. "It's better to play it safe. When you walk in and the manager and owner are there, there's not much sense to argue."

Cone will make the trip to Lakeland today for a start against the Detroit Tigers.

Cone's rapid progress after shoulder surgery put him on track to be ready by Opening Day.
