Coppin women upend UMES

RICHMOND, Va. -- After a season of many ups and downs, it all came together last night for the Coppin State women's basketball team in the final five minutes against Maryland-Eastern Shore in the quarterfinals of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference tournament.

The Eagles were in a tie with UMES when they suddenly began running perfect fast breaks that resulted in layups and free throws on the way to a 76-70 win.

Simone Adams, Trisha Allen and Javonti Jones took turns racing down court in the last five minutes for crucial baskets off passes from point guard Liesha Mitchell.

Adams wound up leading fifth-seeded Coppin (10-17) to the upset win over fourth-seeded UMES (16-10) with 22 points, 10 rebounds, five steals and one assist and one block.

Allen was also outstanding with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Mitchell had just two turnovers with 12 points, eight rebounds, five assists and two steals.

Coppin plays top seed Howard at 1: 30 p.m. today in the semifinals.

COPPIN STATE -- Mitchell 4-6 2-3 12, Falline 3-16 4-5 11, Adair 1-8 1-2 3, Allen 7-166 1-3 15, Adams 7-12 8-14 22, Jones 4-10 2-4 10, Scott 1-3 0-0 3. Totals 27-71 18-31 76.

UMES -- Frazer 4-12 1-1 11, Valez 2-8 3-4 7, Council 3-13 6-6 13, Smith 1-2 0-0 2, Hayes 4-8 0-0 8, Sheldon 5-12 0-0 10, Appleberry 2-6 0-0 4, Thompson 0-2 0-0 0, Simmons 2-3 0-0 4, Spriggs 4-7 3-5 11. Totals 27-73 13-16 70.
