Mary Washington overtakes St. Mary's women in Div. III Caulfield's game-high 23 lead Eagles to victory

Mary Washington freshman Erin Caulfield scored a game-high 23 points to lead the Eagles past host St. Mary's, 56-43, in the opening round of the NCAA Division III women's basketball tournament last night.

After four ties, Mary Washington (21-7) took the lead when Caulfield scored three straight baskets with seven minutes remaining in the first half. Lindsay Stover extended the Eagles' lead to 10 -- 28-18.

The Seahawks (20-8) -- led by Erica Pearson with 20 -- closed the gap to six at 34-28 with 15 minutes left in the game, but the Eagles scored six unanswered points for a 14-point edge.

MARY WASHINGTON -- Caulfield 11-15 1-3 23, Stover 6-10 1-2 13, Huley 0-1 0-0 0, Grace 2-7 0-1 4, Sellers 3-10 0-0 7, Kenney 0-9 1-2 1, Sullins 2-2 0-0 4, Harrington 2-5 1-0 4. Totals 26-59 3-8 56.
