RICHMOND, Va. -- The Morgan State women's basketball team threw a full-court press at North Carolina A&T for 28 minutes yesterday and ran away to a 62-49 victory in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference tournament play-in game at the Arthur Ashe Center.

The win sends seventh-seeded Morgan (6-13, 8-19) against second-seeded Hampton (16-2, 20-6) tonight at 6 in a quarterfinal at the Richmond Coliseum.

The Bears came out flat yesterday in a 10 a.m. start and fell behind the 10th-seeded Aggies 19-6 in the first 12 minutes. Then Morgan coach Darcel Estep went to full-court pressure, which resulted in many of A&T's 32 turnovers.

With freshman forward Shakira Smith leading the way, Morgan closed the deficit to 28-25 at halftime and went ahead for good at 38-36 on freshman Lesley Crowder's 11-foot shot in the lane with 11 minutes remaining in the game.

Smith wound up dominating the game for Morgan, scoring 20 points with eight rebounds and seven steals and playing outstanding defense on two of the top Aggies scoring threats, Fatima Battle and Tennille Woods.

Estep said: "Shakira was on the ball on the press and was superb. She just totally controlled the game for us in all phases."
