Man held in robbery of Eldersburg Wal-Mart

March 04, 1998

A man who said he left Springfield Hospital Center after a six-month voluntary commitment was arrested Monday on charges of robbing the Eldersburg Wal-Mart.

Wayne S. Mims, 39, is being held on $50,000 bail at the Carroll County Detention Center. He was charged with armed robbery, robbery, first-degree assault and theft.

According to charging documents, Mims told state police that he left the hospital Monday morning and needed money to get a hotel room in Westminster.

Troopers arrived at Wal-Mart at 1320 Liberty Road after receiving a call at 9: 47 a.m. Monday. Witnesses said a man who robbed the store walked across the parking lot to the rear of Giant Food. Mims was found hiding behind a trash container.

Troopers said they found the exact amount of money and 10 credit card slips reported stolen from Wal-Mart, and two witnesses identified Mims as the robber.

Prosecutors said Mims was arrested on robbery charges in 1991 and served four years of a five-year sentence. Soon after his release in 1995, he was arrested again on robbery charges.

Mims said he had just been released from prison on the 1995 charges when he entered Springfield last fall.
