ARCADIA, Calif. -- Ninety-five years after the Wright Brothers soared over Kitty Hawk, N.C., Orville N Wilbur's is taking flight.
Orville N Wilbur's is the name of a 3-year-old colt who flew into the 1998 Kentucky Derby picture yesterday with a wire-to-wire, five-length victory in the $200,000 San Rafael Stakes at Santa Anita.
Souvenir Copy, the 4-5 favorite, charged from last place in the field of six on the backstretch but finished a distant second in the 1-mile race, a major prep for the $750,000 Santa Anita Derby on April 4.
"I wasn't prepared to call my horse a flying machine until today," trainer Wally Dollase said of the San Rafael winner, a disappointing fourth at 2-5 in the 7-furlong San Vicente Stakes here last month.
"Now I think it fits."
