S. River's Whitcher pins down crown Alley places second

Second-ranked state champ Nick Alley (112) of Southern lost his regional title, 8-4, to Kent's Jacob Kirwan, but South River's Dan Whitcher (140) beat Mardela's district champ, Dennis Krouse, 12-6, to earn his title at last night's Class 1A-2A East Region Tournament.

Jason Radcliffe (152, third) and Jerome Hurley (171, fourth) were the only other wrestlers to qualify for Southern, while South River's Brian King (125, fourth) also earned the right to participate in the state tournament next week at Western Maryland.

Southern and South River finished eighth and 11th respectively in the 16-team field, with host Kent beating runner-up North East of Cecil, 176.5-165.5.
