Ex-champ Bowe considering return

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. -- Former heavyweight champion Riddick Bowe, claiming he was "bored to death," said last night he is contemplating a ring comeback.

Bowe, 30, who lives in Fort Washington, Md., retired after his rematch with Andrew Golota in December 1996.

Both fights with Golota ended with Bowe writhing on the floor in agony but declared the winner when the Polish fighter was disqualified for repeatedly fouling. Each time, Golota was winning the fight convincingly when the referee intervened.

"I've really only wanted to do two things in my life -- box professionally or be a Marine sergeant," said Bowe, who came to the Taj Mahal to watch unbeaten Washington lightweight Jermaine Fields score his eighth straight victory with a one-punch knockout of Tony Duran.

Bowe's brief episode as a Marine ended last year after he failed to survive the first two weeks of boot camp at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina.

"I'd just like to give boxing another try," he said. "I just started working out, doing some running and shadow boxing."
