Ernst & Young LLP has announced a call for nominations from Maryland companies for its 12th annual Entrepreneur of the Year competition.

Local award recipients will be eligible to compete for the National Entrepreneur of the Year contest, which will culminate in November with a nationally televised awards ceremony.

Nominations must be received by April 3. Eligible companies must have been operating for at least two years.

"It's our way of trying to provide a forum for their much-deserved recognition," said Francis Contino, managing partner of Ernst & Young's Baltimore office.

Last year, eight entrepreneurs from Maryland were selected in the regional competition. Patrick H. Nettles, president and chief executive of Ciena Corp. in Linthicum, was named a national award recipient, a first for Maryland.

The competition is co-sponsored by USA Today, the Nasdaq stock market, The Baltimore Sun, Piper & Marbury LLP and other companies.
