In its first meeting with St. Mary's College, Goucher needed two free throws in the final second to pull out a victory.

This time around, the Gophers left no room for suspense.

Bakari Ward scored 21 of his game-high 27 points in the first half, as host Goucher built a 30-point halftime lead and cruised to a 96-57 win in a pivotal Capital Athletic Conference game.

"We were just focused today," Goucher coach Leonard Trevino said. "We win with our defense, and I thought we did a very good job in that respect."

With the win, Goucher (11-5 overall, 5-1 in the CAC) stayed within a game of league-leader Catholic and a half-game of second-place Marymount. The defending CAC champions have won five of six overall since ending a three-game slide.

This one was never in doubt.

Leading 12-11 after the first five minutes, the Gophers began to pull away, clamping down on defense and embarking on a 10-2 run that put them on top 22-13 midway through the half.

They extended their lead to 13 before frustration began to take its toll on the Seahawks (9-7, 3-4), with coach Bob Flynn and guard Demetrius Henson each getting whistled for technical fouls.

Goucher took full advantage, sinking eight straight foul shots to go up 40-20 with 4: 27 left in the first half. After 15 minutes of domination, scoring 42 of 55 points, the Gophers took a 54-24 lead into the break.

The lead continued to grow in the second half. With his team trailing by 40 with 3: 49 left, Flynn was ejected after receiving his second technical.

Darrian Lee added 15 points and Damian Pitts 13 for Goucher. Derrick Heard scored 14 to pace St. Mary's.
