$21.6 million in budget to upgrade Route 2

Gov. Parris N. Glendening has added $21.6 million to his transportation budget to upgrade Route 2 -- Solomons Island Road.

That amount covers right of way and construction costs.

The mile-long project will widen the existing roadway to provide three lanes in each direction from Virginia Avenue to Southdown Road and two lanes in each direction from Southdown Road to Pike Ridge Road. Sidewalks on both sides of the road, breaks in the median and landscaping also will be done.

Final design for Route 2 reconstruction is under way. The work is expected to begin in 2000 and last through 2002.
