Update: The Olympic Village, which will house some 3,000 athletes and officials during next month's Nagano Winter Games, opened yesterday. About 400 Olympic organizing committee officials and volunteers attended the opening ceremony held in front of the village.
Going for the gold: Former World Cup skiing champion Anita Wachter of Austria tore three knee ligaments in a super-G spill in Cortina D'Ampezzo, Italy, ending her Olympic aspirations and likely closing out her career. Wachter has won 12 races during her decade-long career.
