Authorities seeking motorist who may have witnessed rape

January 21, 1998

Authorities are looking for a motorist who might have witnessed a rape at Westside Memorial Park in Manchester early New Year's Day, state police said.

According to police, a vehicle drove into the park off Route 27 just south of Route 30 between midnight and 2 a.m., while two men were assaulting a woman in a car.

Investigators hope the unidentified motorist saw a small, dark car, possibly a hatchback with a sun roof and flip-style headlights, at the park. The motorist might be able to provide information about that vehicle or its occupants.

Police said the men offered the woman a ride as she walked home from a party, but drove to the park, where one raped her. The motorist apparently startled the men, who took the woman home.

Anyone with information about the incident may call Tfc. Charlene Yinger at 410-857-4382 or Detective Sgt. Bruce Smith of the Maryland State Police at 410-848-3111 or 410-876-8989.
