A call for medical help yesterday led officers to a Mount Vernon apartment where they found an ailing man, more than $400,000 worth of drugs and $65,000 in cash, police said.

Someone summoned an ambulance to an apartment in the 900 block of Cathedral St. about 10 a.m. yesterday, said Sgt. Michael Cassizzi of the Central District.

When paramedics arrived at the address, they found the apartment door locked but forced their way in when they heard moaning coming from the apartment, Cassizzi said.

Paramedics and police officers found a man lying on the floor of the apartment with about $2,100 and drugs near him, Cassizzi said.

Paramedics took the man to Mercy Medical Center, where he was being treated last night for a possible drug overdose, police said.

Police obtained a warrant to search the apartment and found about 9 ounces of heroin, with an estimated street value of $201,000, and about 19 ounces of cocaine, with an estimated street value of about $215,000, Cassizzi said.

Officers also found about $65,000 in cash in a plastic bag and a shoe box, he said.

Last night, police identified the man as Carlos Herrera, 56, who lives in the apartment.

Charges of possession and possession with intent to distribute heroin and cocaine were pending last night, police said.
