Colorful boards on the cutting edge

Add a wild splash of color to your kitchen to combat the winter doldrums with Crate & Barrel's Jelli Boards. The 8 1/2-by-11-inch cutting boards are dishwasher safe, bacteria- and odor-resistant, and won't warp or crack. A set of two (blue/aqua or orange/yellow) is $9.95.

Timely tips

I'm not wild about all the recipes, but I like the tips scattered through the new cookbook "Desperation Dinners!" (Workman, $13.95) by Beverly Mills and Alicia Ross:

* When you cook pasta and vegetables for the same meal, boil the sturdier ones like carrots with the pasta. Remove with a slotted spoon when tender.

* To store fresh parsley, trim the stem ends and stick them in a glass of water in the refrigerator.

* Invest in freshly shredded Parmesan cheese, available at the deli counter. It makes a difference.

* As soon as you get home -- before you even take your coat off -- put the water on to boil.

And my favorite words of wisdom:

"It's amazing the creative heights you can reach when faced with the prospects of a 6 o'clock check-out line."
