Michael G. Riemer, a Harper's Choice resident with more than 30 years of business experience in Howard County, has been named the executive director of the county's Chamber of Commerce.

Riemer, who has been the interim executive director since September, was selected from 150 applicants in a nationwide search, chamber officials said.

Riemer said he wants the Howard County chamber to increase its statewide reputation by attracting more businesses, especially larger companies, as members.

"I intend to really work with the chamber as it exists and attract bigger members and make it more inviting for them to become members," Riemer said.

He replaced Carol K. Baily, who was executive director for seven years. Baily won praise for her leadership before stepping down in July to take a similar post in Chandler, Ariz.

Under Baily's leadership, the 28-year-old group's membership more than doubled to about 1,000 of the county's 7,000 businesses.

Riemer will oversee a budget of $400,000 and a full-time staff of eight.

In 1979, Riemer founded a land development company, Riemer Muegge and Associates Inc.

He served on the chamber's board of directors in 1990 and as chamber president in 1993.
