PCA accounting firm opens in Columbia

James S. Peacock, David C. Condron and B. Jennine Anderson have opened a Columbia-based accounting firm, Peacock, Condron, Anderson & Co., with 21 staff members and consultants.

The CPA firm formerly operated as the Columbia office of the 83-year-old accounting firm, Stegman & Co.

PCA will continue to provide audit, tax and financial planning services to business and nonprofit groups.

Year 2000 computer consulting, technology planning, software solutions, litigation and insurance claims support, marketing consulting, productivity improvement and profitability enhancement are also being offered.

Newport/Stegman Financial, LLC, a mergers and acquisitions firm, will continue its affiliation with PCA.

Romano & Associates wins award for public service ad

Romano & Associates of Columbia has been awarded the Communicator Award of Distinction for a nationally televised public service announcement, created for the National Spit Tobacco Education Progam, a public awareness campaign of the Chicago-based organization, Oral Health America.

The NSTEP spot features mascots from five Major League baseball teams who relay the message that smokeless, or spit, tobacco products are dangerous, addictive and should not be part of baseball.

Romano & Associates, founded by Neil Romano in 1990 as a communications company specializing in multimedia public service campaigns, has developed national television, radio and print public service announcements for the NSTEP campaign.

The company has also established coalitions of professional associations and health care agencies supporting the NSTEP program.

Strategic Success Systems offers self-esteem program

Strategic Success Systems of Laurel, a performance consulting and personal development training company, is celebrating International Boost Your Self-Esteem Month by offering free presentations on the "Secrets of High Self-Esteem" at libraries and community centers during February.

Darlene Butler, president of Strategic Success Systems, is host and producer of the radio shows "UP and to the RIGHT" on WBZS-AM (730), and "Positively Speaking" on WZHF-AM (1390) as well as cable television.

Lola S. Kayler, a commercial lending officer and manager of the business banking department at CFBank (Commercial & Farmers), has been promoted to vice president. She is also security officer for the bank. Kayler, past president of the Maryland Association of Bank Security, has been employed at CFBank for 11 years.

Matthew R. Horowitz, C.P.A., has joined the firm of Valderas and August, P.A., a full-service CPA firm based in Columbia. Horowitz, who operated his own accounting practice for eight years, joined the firm as a partner on Jan. 2. The firm will now be known as Valderas, August & Horowitz, P.A.
