Major League Baseball: Announced that Mariners' Edgar Martinez won Outstanding Designated Hitter Award and was followed in voting by Chili Davis, Paul Molitor, Juan Gonzalez, Reggie Jefferson and David Justice.

Braves: Agreed to four-year, $20.5 million contract with OF Ryan Klesko and one-year, $330,000 contract with OF Danny Bautista.

Devil Rays: Agreed to $7.5 million, three-year contract with SS Kevin Stocker.

Diamondbacks: Agreed to terms with C Kelly Stinnett.

Dodgers: Agreed to four-year, $18 million deal with 2B Eric Young. Agreed to two-year, $1.5 million contract with P Darren Hall and one-year, $450,000 contract with OF Billy Ashley.

Rangers: Agreed to $450,000, one-year contract with P Eric Gunderson.

Tigers: Agreed to $16 million, four-year deal with OF Bobby Higginson.

Basketball

Magic: Signed G Vernon Maxwell to second 10-day contract.

College

Indiana State: Dismissed F Autumn Maynard from women's basketball team for violating team policy.

North Carolina-Asheville: Men's basketball G John Risinger transferred from Evansville.

Saint Louis: Reinstated G Corey Frazier to basketball team after he completed academic requirements.

Texas Christian: Suspended men's basketball C Lee Nailon, NCAA's fourth-leading scorer, one game for pleading no contest to misdemeanor assault.

Football

Patriots: Signed G Max Lane (Navy) to five-year contract.

Hockey

Canadiens: Traded F Stephane Richer, F Darcy Tucker and D David Wilkie to Lightning for F Patrick Poulin, F Mick Vukota and D Igor Ulanov.

Islanders: Reached financial settlement with F Brett Lindros, who was forced to retire at age 20 in May 1996 due to series of concussions.

Mighty Ducks: Assigned former Bandits C Bob Wren to AHL Cincinnati.

Penguins: Assigned G Peter Skudra to IHL Kansas City.

Rangers: Returned LW Sylvain Blouin, C P. J. Stock and D Ronnie Sundin to AHL Hartford. Reassigned D Dale Purinton to ECHL Charlotte.

Sabres: Picked up option on All-Star G Dominik Hasek's contract for 1998-99.

Soccer

NPSL: Will hold 1998 All-Star Game at The Crown in Cincinnati, Ohio, on Feb. 17.

USISL: Created 15-team elite division of W-League.

New England (MLS): All-Star G Walter Zenga retired.
