Navy women roll, keep Patriot lead

Navy scored the first nine points of the second half, running away from Lehigh in a 72-52 women's basketball victory last night at Alumni Hall.

Senior forward Becky Dowling and junior Laurie Coffey scored 13 points each to lead Navy (13-3, 3-0), which overcame 35 percent shooting to maintain its lead over Lafayette and Holy Cross in the Patriot League standings. Up by four at halftime, the Midshipmen used steals and baskets by Laurie Coffey (who also had 12 rebounds) and Felicia Harris to take a 39-31 lead with 18: 52 left.

Lehigh (5-9, 1-2) had a tough time getting untracked, because of a Navy defense that took the ball on each of Lehigh's first four second-half possessions.

Maureen Trigo led Lehigh with 11 points and Kelly Collins had 10.

Senior guard Joanne Groth, who grabbed 15 rebounds on her 23rd birthday, became the eighth player in Navy history to reach the 1,000-point mark when she hit a lay-in with 17: 45 left.
