Angels: Signed P Ramon Ortiz, P Scott Schoeneweis, P Darryl Scott, IF Jaime Burke, Troy Glaus and C Ben Molina to minor-league contracts with invitations to spring training.

Astros: Acquired P Sean Bergman from Padres for OF James Mouton.

Blue Jays: Named Hector Berrios pitching coach of Single-A Hagerstown.

Braves: Agreed to two-year, $1.475 million contract with P Alan Embree, who earned $206,000 last season.

Brewers: Agreed to contract with OF Marc Newfield. Signed 1B rTC Bob Hamelin, who had been with Tigers, to minor-league contract and invited him to spring training.

Dodgers: Agreed to one-year, $685,000 contract with P Darren Dreifort, more than tripling his 1997 contract. Signed P William Brunson, P Marc Deschenes, P Frank Lankford, OF Kevin Gibbs (Davidsonville) and C Paul LoDuca to 1998 contracts.

Phillies: Signed IF Dave Doster. Signed former Orioles P Richie Lewis to minor-league contract and invited him to spring training.

Reds: Agreed to terms with OF Chris Stynes and P Eddie Priest on one-year contracts and with OF Steve Gibralter on minor-league contract.

Rockies: Agreed to four-year contract worth about $23 million with P Pedro Astacio.

White Sox: Agreed to terms on $700,000, one-year contract with P Jason Bere, who made $420,000 last year.

Yankees: Named Jeff Mangold strength and conditioning coach.

Basketball

Hornets: Placed G Bobby Phills (pulled left groin muscle) on injured list. Signed F Donald Royal to 10-day contract.

Kings: Announced sale of 25 percent of team to Maloof Sports and Entertainment.

College

Angelo State: Men's basketball coach Ed Messbarger will retire at end of season.

Buffalo: Extended contract of football coach Craig Cirbus through 2001.

Connecticut: Men's basketball F Sam Funches will transfer to North Texas.

George Washington: G Kristeena Alexander transferred to school from George Mason and will be eligible to play for $H women's basketball team in spring of 1999.

San Jose State: Announced that senior G LaRon Campbell-Hall has left men's basketball team. Suspended freshman G Reggie Cooks five games for team rules violation.

Virginia: Named Kim Graham assistant track and field coach.

Wagner: Suspended C Frantz Pierre-Louis, who has pleaded innocent to a rape charge, from basketball team indefinitely.

Bills: Named Carl Mauck offensive line coach, John Levra defensive line coach and Bill Bradley secondary coach.

Colts: Announced that Bruce Arians will join coaching staff.

Flyers: Sent RW John Druce to AHL Philadelphia.

Maple Leafs: Recalled D Daniil Markov from AHL St. John's.

Rangers: Claimed C Peter Ferraro off waivers from Penguins and assigned him to AHL Hartford. Recalled W Sylvain Blouin from Hartford.

Red Wings: Returned D Yan Golubovsky to AHL Adirondack.

Senators: Sent D Radim Bicanek to IHL Manitoba.

Soccer

Women's World Cup: ABC and ESPN will broadcast next year's tournament.

MLS: Signed D Scott Vermillion, G Andrew Kirk, D Chad McCarty and GK Matt Napoleon to Project-40 contracts.

Montreal (NPSL): Traded M Darko Kolic and considerations to Edmonton for M Ziad Allan.

New York-New Jersey (MLS): Named Alfonso Mondelo coach.
