Officer recuperating from surgery

January 15, 1998|By FROM STAFF REPORTS

Officer Shane C. Stufft, 25, who was shot during a struggle with a suspected drug dealer, was recuperating at home yesterday after he underwent a 90-minute operation on his left forefinger at Union Memorial Hospital on Tuesday.

Robert W. Weinhold Jr., a police spokesman, said Stufft is on medical leave and his "return to duty depends on the outcome of the surgery and the healing process."

Police said Stufft and another officer were working undercover about 2: 30 p.m. Tuesday when they responded to a call for suspected drug dealing in the 1500 block of Woodyear St. in West Baltimore and saw what they thought was a man selling drugs from the trunk of a car.

Police said Stufft, driving an unmarked Chevy Cavalier, chased the suspect two blocks to an alley off Brunt Street. He got out of the car with his handgun drawn and got into a struggle with the suspect. A bullet from Stufft's weapon passed through his forefinger. The suspect was shot in the chest and neck.

Police said Derek McIntosh, 25, of the 4400 block of Old Court Road in Pikesville was pronounced dead at the scene.
