State police investigating death of Finksburg man

January 09, 1998

State police are investigating the death of a Finksburg man who died Dec. 12 after three men assaulted him in Westminster nearly three weeks earlier.

Police said they believe Christopher Costello, 37, of the 3200 block of Sykesville Road was beaten by three men about 10 p.m. Nov. 25 near Routes 32 and 97.

Costello periodically complained to family members about headaches and dizziness afterward, but apparently sought no medical treatment for his injuries. Family members found him unconscious at home on Dec. 11, police said.

He was taken by ambulance to Sinai Hospital in Baltimore, where he died the next day.

State police said they did not become aware of the circumstances surrounding Costello's death until Dec. 18.

Investigators have requested assistance from the offices of the state medical examiner and the county's state's attorney to determine if a homicide occurred.

Costello was driving a red and tan van, and the suspects were in a pickup truck, police said.

Anyone who may have seen suspicious activity about 10 p.m. Nov. 25 near Routes 32 and 97 should contact Detective Sgt. Bruce Smith at the Westminster barracks of the Maryland State Police at 410-876-8989 or 410-848-3111.
