BMX track on town land not likely

January 07, 1998

A Mount Airy resident's seven-month effort to open a bicycle motocross track, which has suffered several setbacks, now faces a legal hurdle.

It is illegal for the town government to lease public property for the track to a private operator, attorney Richard C. Murray advised the Town Council at its meeting Monday night.

Kieth Buswell, whose son is a BMX racer, has been trying since July to find a site for a racing track. The council was receptive to leasing an undeveloped area of Watkins Park but turned down the lease after nearby residents opposed the track.

Councilman David W. Pyatt, the council liaison to the town recreation commission, has been working with Buswell for two months to find another site. Pyatt and Buswell have considered town-owned and county-owned properties.

Murray's opinion appears to rule out a lease of town property unless the council declares that the property is no longer needed for public purposes.
