Bechtel Power Corp. is considering moving its headquarters and more than 1,000 employees out of Gaithersburg, and possibly out of Maryland, a company official said yesterday.

The environmental engineering firm could cut its rent by about a third by leaving Gaithersburg, according to facilities manager David Gleason.

He said the company is considering moving its offices within two years to another Montgomery County location or to Frederick County; Jefferson County, W.Va.; or Loudoun County, Va.

Montgomery County Economic Development Director David W. Edgerley said he is working with the state to retain Bechtel. The county may face stiff competition from neighboring Frederick County, where about 350 of Bechtel's 1,500 employees already work.

Gleason said the company leases office space in Frederick County for $15.50 to $16 per square foot, compared with about $24 in Gaithersburg.

He said Bechtel is aiming for the $15-$16 range in its search for new headquarters space of 250,000 to 300,000 square feet, and cost is the driving factor.
