Police chief's number is wrong for recycling trees

Want to recycle your Christmas tree? Don't call the police -- please.

The 1997-1998 telephone directory published by Bell Atlantic has a misprint that lists the office of Baltimore County Police Chief Terrence B. Sheridan as the number to call for county recycling.

The error was discovered in late November, and brought half-a-dozen calls to the chief's office the first week. Then the wrong-number calls tapered off.

Until yesterday. The "where do I recycle my Christmas tree?" queries began early in the morning and continued all day, according to police spokesman Bill Toohey.

Toohey said that the chief's office -- where the phone is answered by a staff of three -- received about two dozen calls yesterday from residents seeking pickup of their Christmas trees.

The two numbers are close: the chief's office is 410-887-2200. The recycling number is 410-887-2000.

The error was discovered when new directories were delivered, and waste-management employees did a routine check of their listings.

Charles K. Weiss, chief of the Bureau of Solid Waste Management, said the department had supplied the correct information to the phone company.
