1996 Hogue Dry Johannisberg Riesling, Columbia Valley...

Wine of the week

January 04, 1998|By Michael Dresser

1996 Hogue Dry Johannisberg Riesling, Columbia Valley ($7).

It's rare to come across a wine of this much verve, flavor and character for $7 these days. This crisp, Washington state white wine lives up to its label claim of dryness but doesn't push it to the point of unpleasantness. The flavor profile -- a hint of banana on top of lemon, spices, apricot, peach and minerals -- isn't classic German, but the wine is very satisfying in its own way.
