Prado picks up where he left off, winning 2 races

January 02, 1998|By FROM STAFF REPORTS

Edgar Prado, who led North American jockeys in victories in 1997, captured two races yesterday on the New Year's Day card at Laurel Park.

Prado won the third race aboard Hannah's Joy and then guided Brush Over to victory in the $35,000 Holly Beach Stakes, a 1 1/8 -mile race.

Prado, who began his career in 1986, also was honored for his 536 wins at Maryland tracks last year. In addition, his 25 stakes winners were more than any other jockey riding in the state.

Prado donated $1,500 to the Maryland Children's Center, and Laurel gave a similar amount to Linda Akonom, winner of the "Prado Power" contest.
