Ravens staff to coach team in Senior Bowl Marchibroda: 'It's a chance to see the players up front'

The Ravens' coaching staff has been selected to coach the North squad in the 1998 Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala., which the Ravens believe will give them an upper hand headed into the NFL draft in April.

According to Ozzie Newsome, the Ravens' vice president of player personnel, the Ravens' staff will head to Mobile on Jan. 11 to begin coaching for the game that will be played Jan. 17. Washington Redskins coach Norv Turner will coach the South squad.

This is the third time Ravens coach Ted Marchibroda has participated in the game. He coached twice while he was with the Indianapolis Colts.

"It's a chance for us to see the players up front," said Marchibroda, whose Ravens have pressing needs at quarterback, running back and in the secondary. "You get firsthand knowledge. You get to know the players' habits, how much they retain from the meetings to the field and how hard they practice."

Marchibroda said he and his staff, who volunteered to work the game, have yet to get instructions, but in previous games the team was allowed to put in only "basic" offenses and defenses.

During the team's two years in Baltimore, the Ravens have had two of the league's most successful drafts, choosing such players as offensive tackle Jonathan Ogden, middle linebacker Ray Lewis, slot receiver Jermaine Lewis, safety Kim Herring, running back Jay Graham and outside linebackers Peter Boulware and Jamie Sharper.

"This allows you an opportunity to spend a whole week with these players in meetings and on the practice field," Newsome said. "This will give us a chance to know at least 40 guys personally. Usually, you have to depend on other people for information on other players, but not this time."
