William and Mary holds off Towson State women

Julie Sommer scored a game-high 21 points to lead William and Mary to a 68-62 win over Towson in the championship game of the seventh Red Flash Classic yesterday at St. Francis College in Loretto, Pa.

Freshman Jess Gordon's 19 points led the Tigers (6-4). Teammate Shniece Perry had 11 points and a team-high nine rebounds.

The game was tied seven times in the second half before the Tribe (7-4) went on a 7-0 run late in the game to take a 61-55 lead with 2: 59 left. A free throw by Towson's Sonia Keiner cut the margin to three, but a combined three free throws by Katie Averyt and Nekisa Cooper clinched it for William and Mary.

St. Francis (Pa.) 82, Navy 64: The host Red Flash (5-5) defeated the Midshipmen (9-3) in the Red Flash Classic consolation game behind a game-high 26 points from Mary Markey, and 25 points and 18 rebounds from Jess Zonobile.

Becky Dowling led Navy with 20 points and seven rebounds.

Navy trailed 34-31 at halftime and 43-42 after a Dowling layup with 13: 21 left, but the Red Flash used a 13-3 run over the next four minutes to stay ahead for good.
