Coppin State's Billups captures top honors at Wilkes tournament

January 01, 1998|By Lem Satterfield

Coppin State junior wrestlers Sidney Billups (142 pounds) and Kenny Hunter (heavyweight) finished first and second, respectively, at last weekend's Wilkes University Christmas Tournament.

Billups, a former two-time state champion at Laurel High, beat three nationally ranked opponents to improve to 22-3 and earn the event's outstanding wrestler honor. Hunter, an Eastern Region champ who reached last year's NCAA tournament, is a Mount St. Joseph graduate who improved to 20-3.

Billups became the first Maryland high school product and Maryland college wrestler to be named the outstanding wrestler at Wilkes.

"Even the great ones, Rico Chiapparelli, Lloyd Keaser, were never named O.W. at this tournament," said Cornell Bass, a national media director for wrestling. "This is quite a milestone."

Teams at the tournament, which boasted 356 wrestlers and several nationally ranked teams, included Clarion, Loch Haven, Rutgers, Bucknell, Maryland, Navy and Lehigh.
