Access Beyond, Hayes complete merger

December 31, 1997

Access Beyond Inc., a Gaithersburg-based provider of computer network access services, finalized its merger yesterday with Hayes Microcomputer Products Inc., one of the nation's leading computer-modem companies.

The merger creates a firm worth about $250 million. The combined company will be called Hayes Corp. and will trade on the Nasdaq stock market under the symbol HAYZ.

Access Beyond has 80 employees, 60 of them in Maryland.

Access Beyond Chairman and Chief Executive Ron Howard said that although jobs will move from Maryland to Hayes' headquarters in Norcross, Ga., "our population here will be the same or higher one year from now" due to growth in research and development.

David Debora, an analyst for Patterson Travis Inc. in New York, said the merger is a boost for Access Beyond: "They get the Hayes name, which is much better known than the Access Beyond name. They also get a larger company to combine with so that they can afford to lower their prices."

Access Beyond's stock closed yesterday at $4.1875, up 6.25 cents.
