James Nabrit Jr., 97, a former ambassador to the United Nations and president of Howard University, died Saturday at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington.

He had been under treatment for an undisclosed infection at his Washington home when he became seriously ill and was taken to Walter Reed, according to his son James Nabrit III.

Mr. Nabrit was U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations from 1965 to 1967. He was Howard University's president from 1960 to 1965 and from 1968 to 1969.
