Toddler drowns in backyard pond while visiting grandparents' home

December 27, 1997|By A SUN STAFF WRITER

A 2-year-old boy visiting his grandparents Christmas Day drowned in a backyard pond less than 5 feet deep, the Frederick County sheriff's office said yesterday. Investigators concluded that the death was accidental.

Christopher and Anna McManus of Emmitsburg and their son, Hunter, were visiting Charles and Rachel Wastler in Lewiston, said sheriff's spokesman Tim Mitchell. Hunter wandered off a back porch and into the pond, Mitchell said.

"He was playing on the back porch. The parents turned their heads for a second, and he was gone," Mitchell said. Five adults and three children were on the porch at the time, he said.

A sheriff's report said family members were trying to resuscitate the child when an ambulance arrived. He was taken to Frederick Memorial Hospital but could not be revived.
