Washington Auto Show

Starting tomorrow and running through Jan. 3, the Washington Auto Show provides a fast track to the next century with a theme of "Racing to the Millennium." A host of 1998 models cover all market segments, from sports cars to sport-utility vehicles and family sedans and minivans. A look at enhancements in air-bag technology, brake design, restraint systems and vehicle construction is also offered.

The Space Shuttle Orbiter and Space Transportation Exhibit from NASA will be on display, plus a memorabilia exhibit and family entertainment.

Show site is the Washington Convention Center, 900 Ninth St. N.W., Washington, and hours are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. tomorrow through Tuesday and Jan. 1-2, and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday and Jan. 3. Admission is $8 adults, $4 seniors and children 6-12. Call 301-670-1110.

Thomas the Tank Engine

Thomas the Tank Engine, the star of PBS' "Shining Time Station," chugs into Steamtown National Historic Site in Scranton, Pa., tomorrow for an eight-day stop. Visitors can meet Thomas and his friend, Sir Topham Hatt, at one of the few remaining roundhouses in the world that still have working steam engines. There will also be face-painting, garden-scale model trains and Thomas videos. In addition, the park's normal activities will be offered -- history and technology museums, "Steel & Steam" movies, train rides, repair and restoration shop tours, and the annual Festival of Trees.

The Steamtown National Historic Site is at 150 S. Washington Ave. Hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m. tomorrow through Jan. 3, except Saturday and Sunday when Thomas will stay up until 8 p.m. The museum is closed New Year's Day, Jan. 1. Admission is $6, $5 seniors, $2 ages 5-15, under age 5 are free. Call 888-693-9391, Ext. 0.
