County police have charged a Brooklyn Park man with kidnapping his former girlfriend Saturday.

Police said a man approached the 16-year-old girl shortly before 4 p.m. while she was in a car parked on a lot at Baltimore-Annapolis Boulevard and Furnace Branch Road, and ordered her to go with him. When she refused, he grabbed her purse, police said.

The girl got out of the car to get her purse, police said, and the man grabbed her, forced her into his car and drove away. He threatened to kill her, but she managed to signal a passing police cruiser for help, police said.

The officer stopped the car and arrested the man.

Timothy Wayne Popkins, 18, of the 100 block of W. 12th Ave., was charged with kidnapping, assault, robbery and possession of drug paraphernalia.
