Sykesville student at Mount de Sales wins statewide poetry contest

Jaime Sorrell of Sykesville, a junior at Mount de Sales Academy in Catonsville, won first prize at the state level in the Catholic Daughters of America annual poetry contest.

Her poem, "The Sentinel," will advance to national competition. It is published in her school's literary magazine, Images, and reflects on the presence of angels in people's lives.

Jaime is the daughter of Carole Truitt of Sykesville.

Police

Sykesville: A Woodbine resident told police that metal tracks for a Bobcat front-end loader were stolen from woods behind the 4700 block of Arthur Shipley Road between 4: 30 p.m. Dec. 15 and 7: 30 a.m. the next day. The loss was estimated at $2,540.

Fire

Sykesville: Firefighters responded at 2: 12 p.m. Thursday to an auto fire in the 700 block of Obrecht Road. Units were out 15 minutes.
