Man charged with $38,000 child care debt

A Texas man has been arrested on charges of failing to pay his wife, who lives in Maryland, $38,000 in child support, said Lynne A. Battaglia, U.S. attorney for Maryland.

Battaglia said a Howard County circuit judge granted Carol Lynn Morgan of Sykesville custody of her child in March 1984 and ordered her husband, Walter Alan Morgan, 35, to pay $250 a month in child support. Battaglia said Morgan has not made a payment since January 1994.

Battaglia said the man was arrested Thursday in Emory, Texas, and was released after posting $1,500 cash bond. He was indicted Dec. 11. If convicted, he faces up to six months in jail.

Battaglia said the Child Support Recovery Act permits federal prosecution when a parent required to pay support resides in a different state from the child and the amount in arrears exceeds $5,000.
