Police investigate two apparent slayings

December 20, 1997|BY A SUN STAFF WRITER

The body of a 59-year-old woman who had been bound and gagged was found in her East Baltimore apartment yesterday afternoon, one of two apparent slayings city police were investigating yesterday.

The woman's body was found about 1: 30 p.m. in the Johnston Square Apartments, a housing complex for the elderly in the 500 block of E. Preston St. Her identity was not released pending notification of relatives.

Agent Ragina L. Cooper, a city police spokeswoman, said a maintenance man discovered the dead woman after her friends became worried when they did not see her all morning. Cooper said the cause of death was not apparent.

About the same time the woman's body was found, police were called to the 1600 block of N. Castle St. where someone had dumped a trash bag containing a body. A neighborhood resident discovered the bag and called police after looking inside.

The bag was found in the middle of Castle Street, between East Federal Street and East Lafayette Avenue.

Police said it appeared to be a body of a woman, but they could not determine the victim's race or age.
