Richard B. Helinski, 68, state employee

Richard B. Helinski, who worked at his family's service station in Anne Arundel County and was a state employee, died of diabetes Dec. 11 at his Brooklyn Park home. He was 68.

The Baltimore native graduated from Glen Burnie High School in 1947 and went work at the family's Amoco station on Ritchie Highway in Glen Burnie soon after. In 1967 he joined the state Department of Licensing and Regulation and retired in 1991.

He enjoyed working on household projects and taking yearly trips to Alaska to visit relatives.

Services were Sunday.

Survivors include his wife, the former Dolores Copple, whom he married in 1951; a son, Richard John Helinski of Anchorage, Alaska; a daughter, Marianne Varholy of Brooklyn Park; and four grandchildren.

Gene M. Rowe, 78, owned lamp shade store

Gene M. Rowe, founder and owner of a Roland Park lamp shade store, died Dec. 11 of congestive heart failure at the Gilchrist Center for Hospice Care in Towson. She was 78 and lived in Roland Park.

Mrs. Rowe had operated the House of Shades on Deepdene Road in Roland Park from 1957 until the time of her death.

Born Gene Miller, she was a 1937 graduate of the old Greenwood School on North Charles Street. She was married in 1938 to Joseph E. Rowe Jr., who died in 1972.

She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Maryland Historical Society and the Woman's Club of Roland Park.

She was a communicant of Emmanuel Episcopal Church, where services were Saturday.

She is survived by two daughters, Susan R. Gatchell of Ruxton and Dale R. Leand of Barrington, R.I.; a sister, Carolyn M. Swope of Easton; two granddaughters; and a great-granddaughter.
