Purple Passion finishes furiously

December 14, 1997|By Kent Baker

The roll swelled to four straight wins for Purple Passion yesterday at Laurel Park.

In a strong field of older sprinters, Stella Kavazis' 3-year-old colt blazed away in the stretch and scored a 2 1/4 -length victory in the $54,725 Bowie Stakes.

Purple Passion's six-furlong time of 1 minute, 8 2/5 seconds was two-fifths of a second off Fighting Notion's 1992 track record.

"This is a real horse, probably as fast as I've ever had. These were all tough horses, and that is major-league time," said trainer Donald Barr, who took charge of the colt early last month.

Purple Passion set a scorching pace of 22 flat, 44 4/5 and 56 2/5 while dueling Bristling, who gave way in the stretch. Manage a Buck rallied for second.

NOTES: Omar Klinger won four consecutive races. Prado had two winners to increase his yearly total to 513, two behind Sandy LTC Hawley, who is third on the all-time list. The Carousel at Laurel and Polynesian Cup at Colonial Downs have lost their graded status.
