Blue Jays: Traded C Sandy Martinez to the Chicago Cubs for a player to be named. Designated IF Carlos Garcia and IF Jeff Patzke for assignment.

Brewers: Named Joel Youngblood and Doug Mansolino to their coaching staff. Acquired P Chad Fox from the Atlanta Braves in exchange for OF Gerald Williams.

Mariners: Signed OF Rob Ducey to a one-year contract. Named Jesse Barfield hitting instructor.

Phillies: Signed Terry Francona, manager, to a one-year contract extension through 1999. Named Lee Elia scout and Ramon Henderson bullpen coach.

Tigers: Signed free-agent P Frank Castillo. Designated P Fernando Hernandez for assignment. Re-signed Rick Adair, pitching coach; Larry Herndon, hitting coach; Perry Hill, third base coach; Fred Kendall, bullpen coach; Larry Parrish, bench coach, and Jerry White, first base coach, through the 1998 season.

Twins: Signed free-agent OF Otis Nixon, who had been with the Los Angeles Dodgers, to a one-year contract with a club option for 1999.
