Auction raises $22,000 for treatment

December 12, 1997

A Westminster family will use $22,000 raised at an auction Saturday to help their son battle muscular dystrophy.

Ed and Alana Combs organized the event, which drew about 350 people to Four Seasons Sports Complex in Hampstead. Proceeds will help finance an experimental muscle transplant for their 30-year-old son, Andrew, who was recently diagnosed with Becker muscular dystrophy.

"We sold everything down to the last lamp," said Alana Combs. "We even had a 6-year-old donate his teddy bear. We feel so blessed."

The surgery, scheduled for Jan. 22 at the Cell Therapy Research Foundation in Memphis, Tenn., is expected to cost $150,000 and is not covered by insurance.
