That's the ticket!

December 12, 1997|By Laura Lippman | Laura Lippman,SUN STAFF

Too bad the round-trip tickets to Bermuda for Mayor Kurt L. Schmoke and his wife didn't work out. Still, as aide Barbara Bostick-Hunt found out, it's the thought that counts.

As for Housing Commissioner Daniel P. Henson III, who defended the traditional practice of raising money for the mayor's gift ("I can certainly buy a Christmas gift to anyone I feel like") -- I'm a size 10.

In case you missed it: Schmoke's staff, spearheaded by Bostick-Hunt, was collecting money for the rather pricey Christmas gift trip, but Schmoke grinched the idea Wednesday when he got wind of it.

We felt bad for Hizzoner, so we collected ideas for a cheaper gift for the mayor who has everything (except, of course, a safe city with low property taxes, good schools, competitive auto insurance rates, a trustworthy infrastructure, soaring housing values, a growing population, an effective mass transit system and Paul Molitor):

A fast-running Rolex to time the walk from the Wyndham Hotel site to the Convention Center.

Legos -- at last, affordable housing that won't collapse!

Larry Young's HMO connections.

Larry Gibson's patented oil (guaranteed to fix all political machines).

An NFL team.

Deck chairs to rearrange.

Tickets to Jamaica (New York).

A Baltimore County mailing address.

A financial interest in the new Barbara Bostick-Hunt Travel Agency.
