Woman sentenced in insurance scheme

December 10, 1997|BY A SUN STAFF WRITER

An Anne Arundel County woman received a three-year suspended sentence and probation yesterday in a scheme to obtain benefits fraudulently under her former husband's medical insurance policy through the Baltimore County Fire Department, the state attorney general's office said.

Prosecutors said Margaret T. Carter, 53, of Stoney Beach pleaded guilty in Baltimore County Circuit Court to felony theft for obtaining more than $26,000 in insurance benefits after her 1985 divorce from Charles C. Carter. Her former husband had continued to list her as his spouse in a "husband-and-wife" policy, prosecutors said.

Mr. Carter, 57, of Pasadena was sentenced Monday to 90 days of home detention, a two-year suspended prison term and five years' probation. The Carters also must pay $37,590 in restitution.
