December 09, 1997|By FROM STAFF REPORTS

The Roland Park girls basketball team was expected to be one of the area's most improved teams this season.

The Reds showed just how far they have come, stunning Elizabeth Seton, the top-ranked team in the state and the No. 2 team in the Washington, D.C., area, 58-52, Sunday at Seton Keough.

Betsy Gaines scored 22 points for the Reds (2-1). Roland Park was coming off a 45-44 loss to St. John's Prospect Hall on Saturday.

Bladensburg's Elizabeth Seton (2-1) had beaten St. Mary's, The Sun's preseason No. 1, 76-59, on Thursday.

"Before the game, they were asking who Roland Park was," Reds coach Scott Buckley said.
