Several Anne Arundel County police officers were placed on paid administrative leave while police investigate the department's fatal shooting of a robbery suspect who led them on a chase to a dead-end road in an industrial park.

How many officers were taken off patrol was not immediately available, and how long the probe will take is unknown, said Sgt. Edward P. Bergin.

Police shot Kevin P. Ferguson, 43, of the 4200 block of Wentworth Road in West Baltimore about 6 a.m. Saturday after he tried to drive through a police blockade, they say.

He was pronounced dead at the scene, near East Ordnance Road and Baymeadow Drive.

"The first time they shot at him was when he attempted to run them over," Bergin said. He did not know whether Ferguson fired pointed a gun at police, although a gun was found in Ferguson's possession, police said. Bergin could not say whether the gun was found in Ferguson's car or on his body.

Police began the chase after a holdup at a Shell service station at Ritchie Highway and McKinsey Road at 5: 54 a.m. Saturday. Patrol officers spotted a northbound black Mercedes-Benz matching the description of the robber's vehicle on Ritchie Highway near Route 10. When a patrol car pulled up behind it, the Mercedes sped off, police said.

The Mercedes turned right onto Baymeadow, a dead-end, and police blocked the way out. But police said the car made a U-turn and raced toward the officers, who began firing at it.

The car struck the rear of an occupied police cruiser and came to rest straddling a concrete median on Ordnance Road.

The driver got out, and more "shots were fired," Bergin said. He did not know whether Ferguson had pulled a weapon on the officers or fired at them.

Police said Ferguson and the Mercedes matched descriptions of a man and the vehicle involved in recent armed robberies at businesses in the county. Police could not offer details on those holdups.
