James Baronas had 17 points, while Torrey Butler added 14 for No. 6-ranked Mount St. Joseph as the Gaels dropped St. Paul's, 61-52, in a non-conference game yesterday.

No. 12 Loyola 68, Oakland Mills 58: Reggie Gray powered the Dons to 2-0 with 25 points and helped hand the visiting Scorpions (0-1) a season-opening loss.

St. John's Prospect Hall 59, No. 13 Archbishop Spalding 40: Jason Capel had 25 points and nine rebounds to lead St. John's (1-0) over the visiting Cavaliers (0-1).

No. 17 Long Reach 66, Liberty 48: Chris Smith led all scorers with 15 points, and Shawn Green added 14 as the host Lightning built a 33-16 halftime lead and cruised in both teams' season-opener.

No. 18 Mervo 68, Poly 54: Marcus Hatten led all scorers with 26 points, and Damien Jenifer added 21 as the visiting Mustangs won in both teams' season-opener.

No. 20 McDonogh 65, Park 43: David Lunn scored 27 points and 12 rebounds to power McDonogh (3-0). Keith Ganzenmuller led host Park (0-2) with 15 points.

Girls games

No. 3 Mercy 83, Severna Park 47: Jamie Vogtman scored a game-high 21 points and Ashlee Courter added 13 as the host Magic ran over the Falcons.

No. 5 John Carroll 71, No. 10 Meade 70: Jen Westervelt led all scorers with 24 points to lead the Patriots over the host Mustangs in both schools' season-opener. LaTonya Eldridge had points for Meade.

No. 11 Arundel 84, Catholic 37: Sherice Proctor led all scorers with 25 points as the Wildcats fashioned a 54-14 halftime lead and strolled in their first game of the season.

No. 20 St. Frances 58, No. 12 Milford Mill 54: Shanell Watson had 15 points and four assists, while Nillion Watson scored 11 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Panthers (3-0) over the Millers (0-1).

No. 16 Towson 50, Poly 12: Jamiee Reynolds scored 14 points and Sara Lev added 11, as the Generals routed visiting Poly in the season-opener for both teams. Towson led 28-3 at the half.

No. 17 Bel Air 49, North County 31: Becca Jones led all scorers with 14 points to lead the 17th-ranked Bobcats over the Knights in a non-league opener for both teams.
