Siragusa pizza ad in bad taste? Reference to Angelos causes its withdrawal, but Raven just laughs

Ravens defensive tackle Tony Siragusa may have to re-do a recent 60-second Pizza Hut radio commercial because of a reference to Orioles owner Peter Angelos, which some might find offensive, but certainly not Siragusa.

Siragusa was still laughing about it yesterday.

In the advertisement, Siragusa talks about the recent nine-sack game the Ravens had against the Philadelphia Eagles, after which fans were allowed to take $9 off the cost of a pizza, $1 for each sack.

In the ad, Siragusa said: "When the Ravens got nine sacks against the Eagles, I thought Pizza Hut would drop this promotion quicker than Angelos dropped Davey Johnson."

The 60-second commercial was removed Thursday after nearly two weeks of being aired on Ravens flagship stations WJFK and WLIF, both owned by CBS radio.

Officials with the station, Pizza Hut and the Orioles said Angelos did not file any complaints about the commercial.

"We chose to take it off in case it offended Mr. Angelos, but no one called our agency," said Lorraine Concepcion-Lesher, an account executive who works for the Azzam Jordan advertising agency, which represents Baltimore Co-op Pizza Hut.

A WJFK spokesman also said the station had not been contacted by the Orioles, but several sources at WJFK said they were told at an in-house meeting the Orioles had expressed disappointment with the commercials.

Angelos was in a meeting late yesterday afternoon and did not return a phone call to his office. An Orioles official said he was unaware of any complaints from the team about the commercial.

Siragusa, known for his outspokenness, said. "I think Angelos should have more important things to do than worry about Pizza Hut," he said. "I wasn't laughing at him or poking fun at him. I just thought it was a great line.

"I talked about having to leave and doing Greg Montgomery's toenails in the commercial, but [Montgomery, the Ravens' punter] didn't complain. He didn't get offended. It's just a light-hearted commercial. What, is somebody going to sue me now?"

When asked if he was going to re-do the commercial, the 6-foot-3, 320-pound Siragusa said: "I don't know. I'm waiting to hear from Mr. Pizza Hut."
