A Glen Burnie man in a wheelchair was killed Wednesday when he rolled into the path of a car as he crossed Hospital Drive near Southgate Shopping Center, county police said.

Walter E. Smith, 69, of the 300 block of Mountain Ridge Court was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to police, Smith was crossing the street near Crain Highway shortly after 1 p.m., when he rolled into the path of a westbound 1991 Lincoln Town Car driven by Gloria C. Barnstorf, 49, of Baltimore, police said. The car hit Smith and knocked him from his wheelchair, police said.

Officers said they did not charge Barnstorf because she could not have avoided the accident. There was no indication Barnstorf or Smith were using alcohol or drugs, nor that Barnstorf was speeding or driving recklessly, police said.
