Harper's Choice townhouse burns family escapes

December 05, 1997|BY A SUN STAFF WRITER

A Harper's Choice townhouse sustained $140,000 in damage in a fire early yesterday, officials said.

The two-story home, in the 5500 block of Suffield Court, caught fire about 5 a.m., but the family living there escaped after a smoke alarm sounded, fire officials said.

The cause of the blaze has not been determined and is being investigated by the state fire marshal.

"There was lots of smoke," said neighbor Barbara Jay, 62. "The firemen went back in and searched a few times, but everybody had gotten out."
